Lave Thorell has just turned 80. Five years ago, he crossed the finish line on the shores of the Mediterranean in northern Greece after a 70-day hike in fifteen stages between 2012 and 2019. The hike took him across the plains of Poland, over the Carpathians and into Ukraine, through Romania and the Carpathians once more, and finally through beautiful but rather mountainous Bulgaria to Greece. For Lave, this was a kind of pilgrimage - meetings with ordinary people in small towns, villages and vibrant countryside and a tangible closeness to the still wild nature of Central and Eastern Europe.
